Brendon Varu Sentenced for Brutal Attack During Hamilton Pub Fight

In a recent sentencing at the Hamilton District Court, Brendon Lee Varu was handed a 19-month jail term after a brutal attack that left a man severely injured and his family traumatized. The incident, which took place last October at the Te Rapa Tavern in Hamilton, has been described as a "brutal" and "unprovoked" assault.

The victim, who was smaller and older than Varu, had been at the pub with friends to participate in a pool competition. The altercation began when Varu and two of his associates, after being asked to leave the premises, called out to the victim's friend, demanding he come outside for a fight. The court heard that the victim's friend was reluctant to comply, but after some encouragement, he stepped outside, leading to a confrontation.

As the fight escalated, the victim became involved, and the situation turned violent. Varu, alongside his associates, launched a relentless assault on the victim, repeatedly punching him in the head and kneeing him multiple times. The victim's partner and teenage daughter were present at the pub and witnessed the attack, with the girl emitting a "blood-curdling scream" as her father was being attacked.

The victim's partner described the scene as "not a fight, but an attack," and said she felt helpless as Varu continued to strike her partner without restraint. She also recounted the lasting trauma the incident caused to her and their daughter, who was deeply affected by the violence.

In court, Varu's defense lawyer argued that her client was remorseful and had completed an anger management course. However, the judge, Justice Tini Clark, was not swayed and emphasized that the severity of the attack warranted electronic monitoring and emotional harm reparation. Varu was ordered to pay $1,000 in reparation, but the judge made it clear that the assault was "part and parcel of his thuggery."

The judge noted that Varu had no justification for his actions, even though he claimed to have intervened to help his friend. She pointed out that by the time he joined the fight, the situation had already escalated beyond reasonable bounds. The sentencing also delayed Varu's planned move to Australia with his family, a consequence the judge described as a necessary part of the justice process.

The victim, who has since expressed a desire to move on with his life, remains scarred by the events of that night. His partner, however, continues to struggle with the psychological impact of witnessing the attack, which she said "destroyed" their family unit.

This case has sparked a broader conversation about the consequences of violent behavior in public spaces and the need for greater accountability. While Varu's sentence may serve as a deterrent, it also highlights the long-lasting emotional and psychological toll such incidents can have on victims and their loved ones.
