Lockdown Lifted at Hawke’s Bay Hospital and Nearby Schools After Reports of a Gunman
Authorities have lifted the lockdown at Hawke’s Bay Hospital and nearby schools after a report of a suspicious individual on hospital grounds. The incident, which began in the Emergency Department around 1:20 p.m., triggered a rapid response from police and emergency services, leading to the temporary closure of the hospital and surrounding schools.
According to reports, armed police surrounded the Hastings hospital at all exits as a precautionary measure. A spokesperson for St John Ambulance said that one operations manager and a rapid response unit were staged nearby to ensure public safety. The situation was initially reported by a worker at the Angkor Wat Kiwi Bakery & Cafe, who stated that police instructed them to remain in lockdown and not allow anyone to leave the premises.
The Ministry of Education placed Camberley Kindergarten and Heretaunga Intermediate into lockdown, citing an alleged gunman on the loose. Heretaunga Intermediate Principal Phil Jones confirmed the lockdown was ordered by the Ministry and assured parents that the school would provide regular updates on its website. He also urged the public not to visit the school or call during the incident, as it could hinder management efforts and compromise the safety of staff and students.
St Mary's Catholic Primary School principal Paul Wallace asked parents who were under lockdown not to panic and to contact the school if they were at the hospital. He assured them that staff would remain with the children until they could be collected.
While police have not confirmed whether the individual was a threat, the incident highlights the swift and coordinated response by emergency services in such situations. Health NZ has not yet released further details about the alleged gunman, but it is understood that the situation was contained and the lockdown was lifted after approximately an hour.
These types of incidents underscore the importance of preparedness and communication among schools, hospitals, and local authorities. As the community continues to process the event, authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and follow any official updates.
