Pipe Bombs 'Capable of Causing Death' Found Near Man's Body in Auckland

A shocking discovery has been made in Auckland, where two pipe bombs were found near the body of a man found on the side of a motorway. According to police, these devices were capable of causing death or serious injury to anyone nearby.

The man’s body was discovered on a walkway adjacent to the Southern Motorway before lunchtime on July 22, according to Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Hayward from the Counties Manukau CIB.

Two devices recovered near the man’s body have since been determined to be viable pipe bombs. Hayward confirmed that these devices were capable of causing death or serious injury to anyone in proximity. He also stated that thanks to the efforts of specialist assistance on the scene, the devices were safely removed and destroyed.

There is no indication of a wider risk to the public, according to police. A post-mortem examination is currently being conducted on the man, and the scene examination is expected to be completed this afternoon.

The southbound lanes on the Southern Motorway were closed for several hours on Tuesday afternoon as a result of the incident. Hayward emphasized the importance of ensuring the area was made safe before proceeding with further operations, given the scene’s proximity to a major state highway.
