Southern Motorway Closure Linked to Explosive Device Discovery
Authorities have confirmed that the closure of the Southern Motorway in Auckland was due to the discovery of a potentially lethal explosive device near a body found on Tuesday.
According to Senior Detective Mike Hayward, the device was identified as a 'pipe bomb' — a type of explosive typically made from metal tubing filled with explosive material. The device, along with a second similar one, was found near the body of a man who was discovered around 11:30 AM on Tuesday.
Hayward stated that the investigation into the man's sudden death is ongoing, and the devices were examined by specialists to confirm their nature. He confirmed that both devices are indeed explosive and could have caused serious injury or death to anyone nearby.
“The devices have now been safely removed and destroyed,” Hayward said. “They no longer pose a risk to the public.”
The body was discovered near a pedestrian walkway adjacent to SH1 at Highbrook. An area near the motorway was cordoned off and closed to traffic while the devices were being examined and removed.
Autopsy procedures are currently underway, and Hayward said that the site investigation is expected to be completed by this afternoon. He emphasized the importance of ensuring public safety, given the proximity of the incident to a major highway.
This incident highlights the critical role of law enforcement in managing potential threats and safeguarding public spaces. The swift response by police and bomb disposal teams has been praised as a model for similar situations in the future.
As the investigation continues, the community remains on alert, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
