Vaping Product Warning Issued Over Chemical Linked to 'Popcorn Lung'
The Ministry of Health has issued a public health warning regarding a specific vaping product that contains excessive levels of a chemical linked to a serious lung condition known as 'popcorn lung.' This condition, formally called bronchiolitis obliterans, has been associated with the inhalation of diacetyl, a chemical commonly used in flavoring agents for its buttery taste.
The affected product is the Suntree - Vanilla Cream (30ml), which has been found to contain diacetyl at a concentration more than four times the legal limit in New Zealand. According to regulations, the maximum allowable level of diacetyl in vaping products is 22 parts per million (ppm). The Ministry of Health has taken this action under section 72(1) of the Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Act, emphasizing the importance of public health and safety.
Diacetyl inhalation at high levels has been linked to inflammation and scarring in the lungs, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, and fatigue. While the risk of developing lung disease from short-term exposure is considered low, the Ministry of Health is urging users who experience any respiratory symptoms or have concerns to seek advice from a healthcare provider immediately.
Hoopers Vapour Ltd, the notifier of the product, has initiated a consumer-level recall and is removing the product from retail sale. It is understood that around 300 units of the product have been sold over the past 17 months. The Ministry of Health has advised consumers to stop using the product immediately. Unused liquid can be returned to the store of purchase or safely disposed of by flushing it down the sink with plenty of cold water, as per the Ministry's guidelines.
Current legislation does not require pre-market testing or approval of vaping products. However, manufacturers and importers are required to notify the Ministry of Health and provide information demonstrating how their products meet the established chemical safety standards. These standards cover a range of substances, including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and various metals, ensuring that vaping products are as safe as possible for consumers.
This incident highlights the ongoing need for vigilance in the regulation of vaping products and the importance of ensuring that all products on the market comply with safety standards. Consumers are encouraged to remain informed and to take appropriate action if they suspect a product may be harmful.
