D-Day Veteran and TikTok Star 'Papa Jake' Larson Dies at 102
The self-described country boy from Minnesota was “cracking jokes til the end.”
D-Day veteran “Papa Jake” Larson, who survived German gunfire on Normandy's bluffs in 1944 and later became a TikTok star with 1.2 million followers, has passed away at the age of 102. Known for his humor, warmth, and deep respect for those who came before him, Larson touched the lives of millions around the world.
Described by his granddaughter, McKaela Larson, as “cracking jokes til the end,” he left behind a legacy of love, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to remembering the sacrifices of his fellow soldiers. Tributes poured in from across the globe, with followers and admirers flooding his TikTok account with messages of condolence and gratitude.
Born on December 20, 1922, in Owatonna, Minnesota, Larson enlisted in the National Guard at the age of 15, lying about his age to join the military. He was stationed in Northern Ireland in 1942 and played a key role in the planning of the Normandy invasion as an operations sergeant.
On D-Day, June 6, 1944, Larson was among the nearly 160,000 Allied troops who stormed the Normandy shore. He survived machine-gun fire upon landing on Omaha Beach and made it to the bluffs, where German gun emplacements had claimed the lives of many of his comrades.
“We are the lucky ones,” he once told The Associated Press during a D-Day commemoration. “We are their family. We have the responsibility to honor these guys who gave us a chance to be alive.”
His service earned him a Bronze Star and a French Legion of Honor. In recent years, he made numerous trips to Normandy for D-Day commemorations, where he became a beloved figure, known for his hugs and genuine connection with people of all ages.
One of the most touching moments in his later years was when he met another veteran, Staff Sgt. “Papa Jake” Larson, who was honored at Disneyland during a special flag retreat ceremony. At 101 years old, he was celebrated as an Honorary Citizen, a fitting tribute to a man who had served his country with unwavering courage.
Later in life, Larson found a new platform to share his story and honor his fellow veterans. On TikTok, he became a beloved figure, garnering 1.2 million followers and sharing stories that reminded people of the sacrifices made during World War II.
“Papa Jake” will be remembered not only for his service and bravery but also for his kindness, humor, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were inspired by his journey.
