Masterton Police Intensify Crackdown on Illegal Hunting in Wairarapa

In a recent and significant move to combat unlawful hunting, police in Masterton have stepped up their efforts in Wairarapa, resulting in a series of arrests and firearm seizures. These actions are part of a broader initiative to hold poachers accountable and protect the region’s natural resources.

On Wednesday, a 50-year-old man was arrested after police discovered three firearms and cannabis at his Masterton address during a search. He is set to appear in Masterton District Court on 4 August, facing charges for unlawful possession of non-prohibited firearms, cultivating cannabis, and unlawful hunting. Another man, aged 44, was also arrested at the same location on unrelated charges, including kidnapping and indecent assault.

These arrests followed a series of investigations by the Wairarapa Rural team, which has been working diligently to address the issue of poaching. Inspector Nick Thom, the Wairarapa Area Commander, emphasized that poaching is a serious issue that often goes unreported but has real consequences for communities.

"Poaching has real effects on the community, and any offenders will face real-world consequences," Thom said. He added that two other men were charged with unlawful hunting earlier this year, both of whom were linked to illegal firearms. These men are due to appear in Masterton District Court on 24 July.

Thom urged hunters to abide by the law and obtain the necessary licenses before engaging in hunting activities. He also warned that anyone found breaching these rules could face enforcement action.

"This should serve as a reminder that people should not be shooting from vehicles or targeting deer on private land," Thom said. "People must have a firearms license and get permission to hunt prior to going out to do so."

The police have also encouraged local residents to report any suspicious behavior or vehicles to authorities. This community engagement is seen as a vital part of the ongoing effort to deter illegal hunting and protect Wairarapa’s wildlife.

With these recent actions, the police are sending a clear message: unlawful hunting will not be tolerated, and those found breaking the law will face the full force of the law.
