Over 60kg of Methamphetamine Worth $22 Million Seized at Auckland Airport
In a significant operation at Auckland International Airport, customs officials have intercepted more than 60 kilograms of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $22.6 million. This latest seizure highlights the ongoing efforts by border security to combat the growing threat of illicit drugs entering the country.
Customs Officers Act Quickly to Prevent Harm
The drugs were found in two unaccompanied duffle bags that arrived on a flight from Malaysia. During routine screening, customs officers identified the bags and discovered vacuum-sealed packages inside. These packages tested positive for methamphetamine, with one bag containing 30 kilograms and the other 30.3 kilograms.
The seizure is a major victory for New Zealand’s border security, as the methamphetamine could have caused an estimated $63.26 million in harm and costs to the community. Paul Williams, Customs Auckland Airport manager, praised the officers for their vigilance and quick action in preventing the drugs from entering the country.
A Year of Intense Efforts at the Border
Williams highlighted that this year has been particularly challenging for customs officers at Auckland International Airport, as organized criminal groups have been increasing the volume of illicit drugs they attempt to smuggle into the country. Despite the challenges, officers remain alert to various tactics used by drug couriers, including the use of unaccompanied luggage.
He emphasized that the seizure was a direct result of strong intelligence, trusted partnerships, and the frontline vigilance of customs officers. This successful operation sends a clear message to those attempting to exploit the border for illegal activities.
A Call for Community Involvement
Williams also noted that everyone has a role to play in protecting New Zealand’s borders and communities from illegal drugs. He encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to customs officials.
This is not the first time customs officers have made such a significant seizure. In recent months, there have been multiple reports of large-scale drug busts at various ports and airports across the country, indicating a growing trend in drug trafficking through New Zealand’s borders.
As the fight against drug trafficking continues, the collaboration between customs officials, law enforcement, and the public remains crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of New Zealand communities.
