Community in Waiuku Mourns Loss of Three Lives in Tragic Car Crash

The Waiuku community is reeling from a devastating triple-fatality crash that claimed the lives of two students and their relative on Masters Rd on Tuesday afternoon. The incident has left the local school community in shock, with the principal of Mauku Primary School expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss.

Frances (Sesi) Latu-Vailea, her daughter Oneahi Vailea, and niece Marly Tulua were killed instantly in the crash. The trio had been heading home from school when the accident occurred. The community has been left struggling to come to terms with the sudden and senseless loss.

Principal James Christie of Mauku Primary School issued a statement to the Herald, saying: “We are deeply saddened by a tragic accident that has impacted our school community. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the whānau affected during this incredibly difficult time.” He added that the school is working closely with the Ministry of Education to ensure the best possible support for students, staff, and the wider community.

Leisa Maddix of the Ministry of Education confirmed that a Traumatic Incident Team would be deployed to support the school community and would remain on-site as long as needed. The team will provide psychological and emotional support to those affected by the tragedy.

One family member, who wished to remain anonymous, described the two children as “bubbly and smiley tots” who were full of life and curiosity. Oneahi, who was just beginning her first term of school, was said to love dinosaurs, singing, and dancing. Frances Latu-Vailea was described as a loving mother and a caring friend who left behind three sons, including an 8-week-old baby. Her husband, Amanaki Vailea, is now the sole caregiver for the children.

As of Friday morning, a Givealittle fundraising page had already raised over $72,000 for the grieving family. A family member said Amanaki had been “overwhelmed” by the outpouring of support and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to grieve without the added burden of financial stress.

The tragedy has sparked a wave of community support and solidarity, with local residents and organizations coming together to offer assistance and comfort to the grieving family and the broader school community. The incident is being investigated by local authorities, and further updates are expected in the coming days.

As the community mourns the loss, the words of the principal echo in the hearts of many: “We are deeply saddened” by this tragedy, and the support from the community has been a source of comfort in these darkest of times.
