South Korea's Top Court Upholds Acquittal of Samsung's Lee Over Contentious 2015 Merger


In a landmark decision, South Korea's Supreme Court has upheld the acquittal of Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong on financial criminal charges related to the 2015 merger between Samsung affiliates. This ruling marks the end of years of legal battles and sets a significant precedent for corporate governance and shareholder rights in the country.


The Seoul Central District Court first acquitted Lee in 2024, stating that prosecutors failed to provide sufficient evidence that the merger was conducted unlawfully with the intent to strengthen Lee's control over Samsung.
