Severe Weather Batters Northern and Eastern Regions of New Zealand

Residents in Northland, Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula, and the East Coast are bracing for a day of heavy rain and powerful gales, as the New Zealand MetService has issued multiple weather alerts. The storm system, currently situated off the coast of Northland, is expected to move eastward across the North Island throughout the day, bringing with it a mix of strong winds, heavy downpours, and the potential for flooding.

According to MetService meteorologist Devlin Lynden, the situation is particularly dire for the northern regions. “If I wanted to be anywhere, I’d be in the South Island. In the north, it’s wind, rain and snow, and in the south, it’s a beautiful day today,” he said in an interview with the Herald.

Lynden explained that a low-pressure system is to blame for the current weather chaos. “We have a low-pressure system sitting just to the west of the Northland area, and that’s expected to move east over the top of the island throughout the day,” he said. The system is already causing significant disruption, with wind gusts reaching up to 75km/h at Cape Rēinga and 70km/h near the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Heavy rainfall has been recorded across the region, with Birkdale in Auckland receiving 19mm of rain in just one hour this morning. Lynden warned that the situation is likely to worsen, with the potential for flooding and hazardous road conditions.

MetService has issued a heavy rain watch for Gisborne/Tairāwhiti and Hawke’s Bay, with the possibility of these alerts being upgraded to warnings. In particular, the East Coast faces a heightened risk of flooding, as streams and rivers may rise rapidly, leading to surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions.

In addition to the rain and wind, a road snowfall warning has been issued for the Desert Road section of State Highway 1, with up to 3cm of snow expected at higher elevations. Lynden urged residents to stay informed about the weather and to take necessary precautions.

As the storm continues to move eastward, the focus of the weather chaos is expected to shift further inland. However, the impact on the affected regions will be felt for the remainder of the day and into the night.

Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor local weather updates closely. Emergency services are on high alert, and local authorities are urging the public to remain prepared for any sudden changes in the weather.
