'Not all bad': Magda Szubanski shares jokes in update on cancer treatment

The beloved Australian actress uses humor to cope with her cancer treatment, showing off a new Lego set as a way to stay entertained.

Magda Szubanski, best known for her iconic role in Kath and Kim, has shared a rare update on her ongoing battle with cancer. In a recent Instagram post, she took a lighthearted approach, joking about her situation while showcasing a new Lego Land Rover set.

“I am such an 11-year-old boy trapped in a 64-year-old lesbian’s body,” she joked, adding, “I don’t know how that happened. It just is what it is.”

Despite the challenges of her treatment, Szubanski remains optimistic. In the caption of her post, she mentioned that the Lego set will keep her busy, even with the numbness in her fingertips caused by chemotherapy.

“But I’ve planned ahead and ordered a building kit with pliers and finger protectors!! GOOD TIMES!!!” she wrote. “Now all I need is a Lego Queen Elizabeth II to pop in the driver’s seat.”

Her post quickly garnered support from fans and fellow celebrities alike. Comments poured in, with fans joking about a Lego version of her Kath and Kim character, Sharon Strezlecki. One user wrote, “We need a Lego Sharon Strezlecki to pop in the driver seat!”

Another fan praised her spirit, saying, “The one thing chemo hasn’t taken away from you is your spirit & your sense of humour Magda. You rock, you’ve got this.”

Earlier this year, Szubanski revealed that she was diagnosed with stage four mantle cell lymphoma, a rare and fast-moving type of cancer. In a previous interview, she spoke candidly about her diagnosis, saying, “I won’t sugarcoat it: it’s rough. But I’m hopeful.”

She also shared that her medical team has been excellent, and she’s being lovingly cared for by friends and family. “This is an obscure cancer and was only discovered incidentally via a breast screen where they found my lymph nodes were up,” she explained.

Szubanski has had a long and successful career in Australian television and film, appearing in shows like Full Frontal and Big Girl’s Blouse, as well as movies like Babe, where she played the farmer’s wife, Esme Hoggett.

Her recent update has once again shown the world that she’s not just a talented performer, but also a woman of incredible strength and humor, even in the face of adversity.
