Weta FX Nominated for Two Emmy Awards for Groundbreaking Visual Effects

Weta FX, the renowned New Zealand-based special effects company, has made history by securing two Emmy Award nominations for its exceptional work on two major television series. The nominations highlight the studio's continued excellence in visual effects, solidifying its reputation as a global leader in the field.

The Emmy nods are for the category of Outstanding Special Visual Effects, recognizing Weta FX's contributions to the second seasons of House of the Dragon and The Last of Us. These shows have captivated audiences with their immersive storytelling and stunning visual landscapes, and Weta FX has played a key role in bringing these visions to life.

For House of the Dragon, Weta FX's team, led by VFX supervisor Wayne Stables and VFX Producer Marcus Goodwin, worked on the intricate portrayal of dragons Seasmoke and Vermithor, as well as the digital environments of Harrenhal and the dramatic Dragonmont cave. One particularly complex shot involved 5,400 frames meticulously stitched together, showcasing the studio's technical prowess.

On The Last of Us, VFX supervisor Nick Epstein and animation supervisor Dennis Yoo were thrilled to receive their nomination. The show, which is known for its intense and emotionally charged narrative, presented unique challenges that Weta FX rose to meet. Their work was especially evident in the second episode, where a massive horde of zombies, known as the 'Infected,' emerges from the snow to unleash chaos on the town of Jackson, Wyoming.

This is not the first time Weta FX has been recognized for its work. The company has previously won four Emmys for the first season of The Last of Us, as well as for seasons 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones, and most recently for the thriller Ripley in 2023.

As the Emmy Awards ceremony approaches in September, Weta FX's team is undoubtedly proud of their achievements. Stables expressed his gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing that it is a collective effort.
