Major Hells Angels Operation in Whanganui Results in 72 Charges

Whanganui police have made a major breakthrough in their efforts to combat organized crime, arresting key members of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang and laying 72 charges against 19 individuals linked to the group. The operation, called Operation Round Up, has been described as a significant blow to the gang’s influence in the region.

The arrested individuals include the Whanganui chapter’s president, vice-president, and sergeant-at-arms, among others. The charges include drug trafficking, money laundering, and the supply of methamphetamine and cocaine. The operation, which began in March 2024, involved extensive planning and resources, with over 30 search warrants executed across the North Island.

Police said the operation involved both overt and covert tactics, with assistance from the armed offenders squad and the special tactics group. A total of $2.5 million worth of assets were seized, including five firearms, a brick of cocaine, 10 ounces of methamphetamine, and $7,000 in cash. Vehicles, motorcycles, and properties were also confiscated, along with $108,000 in cash.

Central District crime manager Detective Inspector Craig Sheridan and Whanganui Police area commander Inspector Neil Forlong outlined the operation at a media stand-up outside the Whanganui Police Station. Sheridan emphasized that the operation was a major disruption to the Hells Angels’ activities in the area, particularly in the distribution of methamphetamine.

Forlong noted that the Hells Angels had been well-entrenched in the Whanganui community since 1992. He highlighted that methamphetamine use remains a significant issue in the region, with wastewater data showing higher usage levels compared to the national average. This, he said, leads to social harm, including addiction, mental health issues, and increased criminal activity.

Police continue to investigate and may bring further charges against additional individuals. Forlong stressed that the operation was a significant day for Whanganui and its people, and that police are committed to making the city safe by targeting those who engage in illegal activities.

Those arrested appeared in court on Tuesday or are expected to appear in the coming days in Whanganui, Palmerston North, Hastings, and Tāmaki Makaurau. The operation has been hailed as a major step forward in the fight against organized crime in the region.
