Major Police Operation Leads to 19 Hells Angels Members Arrested
A significant police operation has led to the arrest of 19 members and associates of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, marking a major blow to organized crime in the region.
Operation Round Up, which began in March 2024, culminated in a coordinated effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies. Over 30 search warrants were executed across Whanganui, Auckland, Palmerston North, and Hastings. The operation resulted in the seizure of nearly $2.5 million in assets, including five firearms, a brick of cocaine, $7,000 in cash, and approximately 10 ounces of methamphetamine.
Police also restrained five motorcycles, seven vehicles, three properties, two jet skis, and around $108,000 in cash. The Central District Organised Crime Unit spearheaded the operation, with support from various police departments across the region.
Among those arrested were 17 men and two women, including the president, vice-president, and sergeant at arms of the Whanganui chapter. They now face a range of charges, including importing cocaine and methamphetamine, participating in organized crime, and possessing drugs for supply.
Whanganui Area Commander Inspector Neil Forlong emphasized the impact of these arrests on the community. "This gang has been part of the fabric of Whanganui for years, and the generational harm they have caused is significant," he said. However, he also highlighted the importance of supporting those affected by the arrests, including partners and children who may have relied on the gang's activities.
Local agencies are working to provide support to affected families, and there are discussions about introducing a meth harm reduction program in the area, with police expressing support for the initiative.
All those arrested appeared in court on Tuesday or are expected to do so in the coming days in Whanganui, Palmerston North, Hastings, and Auckland.
