In the wake of severe flooding in the Nelson-Tasman region, Civil Defence officials are mobilizing to evaluate the extent of damage to homes and address the long-term welfare needs of affected residents.

The area has endured weeks of relentless rain, leading to widespread flooding, landslides, power outages, and road closures. The situation has left many communities in disarray, with properties suffering significant damage.

James Thompson, a group controller with Civil Defence, confirmed that building inspectors will be conducting assessments on Sunday. Properties with water damage will be marked for further action. This step is crucial in determining the level of assistance required by homeowners.

As part of the relief efforts, the Motueka Recreation Centre at 40 Old Wharf Road will be open from 10 a.m. for residents to discuss their welfare needs with various agencies. This initiative aims to provide a centralized location for people to seek help and information.

In addition, free meals will be available at Te Maatu wharenui at Motueka High School from midday to 5 p.m. on Sunday. This service is designed to support those who may have lost access to food due to the floods.

The Nelson-Tasman region remains under a state of emergency, with the focus shifting from immediate crisis response to long-term recovery planning. Civil Defence and local authorities are working closely with communities to ensure that the needs of residents are met.

As the cleanup continues, the resilience of the local population is being tested. However, with coordinated efforts from Civil Defence and community organizations, there is hope for a swift and effective recovery.
