Peeni Henare to Run for Labour in Tāmaki Makaurau By-Election

Labour MP Peeni Henare has been confirmed as the party's candidate for the upcoming Tāmaki Makaurau by-election, marking a significant moment for the region and the political landscape of New Zealand.

Following the passing of Te Pati Māori MP Takutai Moana Natasha Kemp last month, a by-election has been called to fill the vacant seat. Henare, who previously held the Tāmaki Makaurau seat since 2014, is now vying to reclaim it for Labour. His campaign will focus on key issues such as employment, healthcare, housing, and the rising cost of living, which have become central concerns for many residents.

"I am humbled and honoured to be selected to represent Labour in the upcoming by-election," Henare said. "Tāmaki Makaurau is where I was born and is my home. I know the challenges that many whānau are facing. The cost of living is putting significant pressure on whānau just to put kai on the table." He emphasized the need for better-paying jobs, accessible healthcare, and affordable housing to help families thrive.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins praised Henare's experience and commitment, stating, "He has the experience and track record to deliver real solutions for working families, rangatahi, kaumātua, and our most vulnerable whānau." This endorsement underscores the importance of the seat and the expectations for the new candidate.

Meanwhile, former Newshub broadcaster Oriini Kaipara has been chosen to contest the by-election for Te Pāti Māori, adding to the competitive nature of the race. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has yet to announce the specific date for the by-election, but the process has already begun with the publication of the notice of vacancy in the Gazette.

The by-election is expected to be a closely watched event, with both parties vying for the support of the local electorate. As the campaign unfolds, the focus will remain on the issues that affect everyday lives, from economic stability to community well-being.
