All Blacks v France: Tupou Vaa’i ruled out as All Blacks commit to rotation for final French test

The All Blacks have confirmed that Tupou Vaa’i will be ruled out of the final test against France due to a failed head injury assessment, marking a shift in the team’s strategy as they prepare for the final match of the series.

With the series already secured after a dominant performance in Wellington, the All Blacks have embraced a rotation policy, ensuring the entire squad gets a chance to shine in what could be their final test of the season. This decision reflects the team's commitment to developing depth and giving younger players valuable experience on the international stage.

Vaa’i, who has been a standout performer, particularly in his new role as a blindside flanker, was unable to pass the head injury assessment following his latest appearance. Assistant coach Jason Holland praised his contributions, saying, "Tupou gives you another big man in your lineout but he’s mobile and he’s quick around the park and he likes to put a shoulder on defensively." However, with the need to manage player health, Vaa’i’s absence has opened the door for new faces to step up.

Samipeni Finau, a versatile Chiefs blindside, is expected to step into the No. 6 jersey, while Luke Jacobson is also in contention. Meanwhile, Caleb Clarke is sidelined for five to six weeks due to an ankle injury sustained in training, and Sevu Reece could return from a head knock that affected his performance in the first test.

Patrick Tuipulotu, who made a strong return as a starter, may also be sidelined due to a knee injury. This has led to Fabian Holland being called upon to start his third consecutive test, and Naitoa Ah Kuoi could make his All Blacks debut on his home Super Rugby Pacific pitch. Anton Lienert-Brown, recovering from a broken collarbone, is expected to start in the midfield, possibly alongside Quinn Tupaea.

Other key changes include Damian McKenzie potentially starting at first five-eighth, with Noah Hotham and Brodie McAlister set to feature. Ruben Love, who made a brief but impactful test debut, could be promoted to start at fullback, given Will Jordan's ongoing knee issues.

Holland highlighted Love's readiness, saying, "Ruben has been unbelievable at training and setting us up. You saw how the French play with their kicking game and control and how they try and hurt you in the air." Love’s versatility and training performance have made him a strong candidate for the role.

The All Blacks are balancing the need for change with the desire to maintain their competitive edge. As Holland noted, "We’ve got a few guys who are chomping at the bit and have been training really well by setting the fifteen up the last couple of weeks. There’s some high energy among those guys who are dying to have a crack."

As the final test approaches, the All Blacks are focused on delivering a strong performance while giving as many players as possible the opportunity to shine on the international stage.
