New All Black Timoci Tavatavanawai Makes Dream Come True

In a heartwarming moment for rugby fans and his family, Timoci Tavatavanawai, a Fiji-born Highlanders midfielder, made his debut for the All Blacks in a 43-17 victory over France in Wellington. It was a dream realized for the 27-year-old, who has long aspired to represent New Zealand on the international stage.

Tavatavanawai, who came off the bench during the second test, expressed his emotions during the national anthem, a moment that brought tears to his eyes. For him, the achievement was more than just a personal milestone—it was a tribute to his late father, who had always supported his dreams.

"It was always a goal of mine to play rugby for New Zealand, for the All Blacks," Tavatavanawai said. "It was my goal and my dad's goal too." He added, "I just couldn't hold back [the tears], looking up at the sky to him where he's watching over me as I made the dream come true."

Tavatavanawai moved to New Zealand in 2017 to chase his dream, but tragedy struck when his father passed away in 2022, just before he could return to Fiji. Due to border restrictions at the time, he was unable to attend the funeral, making the moment in Wellington even more significant.

"He'll be smiling at the moment. His shoulders will be up and he'll be going around telling people up there that we made it," he said.

New Zealand Rugby made it possible for Tavatavanawai’s mother and two of his younger siblings to travel to New Zealand for his debut, a gesture that brought immense joy to the family. "I picked them up at the airport and for my younger siblings, it was their first time in New Zealand and first time on the plane. That's why it was extra special today," he said.

Coach Scott Robertson praised Tavatavanawai for his performance and the story behind his journey. "He's a man of few words but when he spoke about himself and his nine siblings and his family, it's a pretty incredible story," Robertson said. "He still wanted to perform. He took those opportunities when he was out there. His story to get here is pretty special."

Tavatavanawai described the experience as surreal. "Way bigger than I expected from the start. To get a feeling and a taste of test footy [was amazing]. It's surreal."

As the All Blacks continue their campaign, Tavatavanawai's debut marks a new chapter in the team's story. His journey from Fiji to the international stage has captured the hearts of many, proving that with hard work and perseverance, dreams can indeed come true.
