Supermarket Loyalty Card Cyberattack Sparks Password Warning
A recent cybersecurity incident has prompted a major warning for customers of a leading supermarket chain, urging them to change their passwords and remain vigilant against potential threats.
Customers of the New World Clubcard loyalty program received an email on Friday night informing them of a suspicious cybersecurity incident. The message stated that scammers had attempted to access accounts by trying common passwords across multiple usernames. While the company emphasized that its systems had not been breached, some accounts may have been compromised due to weak or reused passwords.
"Our technology team has identified suspicious external activity where scammers have attempted to gain access to accounts by trying commonly used passwords across many usernames," the email read. It further stated that some Clubcard accounts with weaker or reused passwords may have been accessed without the cardholder's authorization.
New World, which operates under the Foodstuffs parent company, has advised customers to update their passwords to ensure their accounts remain secure. The company also confirmed it is working with cybersecurity experts to monitor for any further malicious activity.
"We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. Your privacy and security are extremely important to us, and we have taken these actions to protect you," the email concluded. While the company has not confirmed the exact number of affected accounts, it urged customers to remain cautious and take proactive steps to safeguard their personal information.
Experts recommend that individuals who have been affected by data breaches should immediately change their passwords, use unique combinations, and enable two-factor authentication where possible. This incident highlights the growing threat of cybercrime and the importance of maintaining strong digital security practices.
As cyberattacks continue to rise, it's more important than ever for consumers to stay informed and take steps to protect their online identities.
