Illegal Concrete Dumping Sparks Investigation in Katikati
Residents of Katikati are being urged to come forward with information after a large pile of illegally dumped concrete was discovered along Thompson’s Track, a popular area for 4WD enthusiasts and hikers.
The Western Bay of Plenty District Council has launched an investigation into the incident, which is part of a growing trend of illegal dumping in the region. The concrete, which is believed to be reinforced, is thought to have originated from a construction or commercial site rather than a private residence.
"If you think you saw it being transported or have any information about where it might have come from, we’d really like to hear from you," said Katie McHugh, the council’s solid waste operations lead.
Alongside the concrete, the council has also found other waste items, including green waste, whiteware, furniture, and household items. The area, located at the end of the maintained gravel section of Thompson’s Track, is a mix of council and Department of Conservation (DoC) land.
The council and DoC are working together to clean up the site, with an estimated cost of between $25,000 and $30,000. McHugh added that the council spends approximately $150,000 annually on removing and disposing of illegally dumped waste across the district.
To prevent further incidents, the council has installed a gate at the entrance to the track, restricting vehicle access. However, people can still reach the area on foot or by bike.
"We urge people to do the right thing and dispose of any waste at the appropriate facilities," McHugh said. She highlighted the availability of community recycling and green waste centres in nearby towns like Te Puke and Katikati, as well as refuse transfer stations in Te Maunga and Waihī.
DoC operations supervisor Colette Wi expressed disappointment over the dumping, calling it some of the worst she had seen. "It’s taking us away from our core work," she said, adding that DoC is collaborating with the council to find long-term solutions.
Residents are encouraged to report any illegal dumping via the Antenno app, by email at [email protected], or by calling 0800 TRASHY. All reports will be treated as confidential.
As the council continues its efforts to clean up the area, the community is reminded of the importance of responsible waste disposal and the impact of illegal dumping on local ecosystems and public resources.
