Residents Evacuated Following Landslide in Muriwai, Auckland

Emergency services are on high alert in Muriwai, Auckland, after a significant landslide forced the evacuation of several properties. The incident has raised concerns, especially given the area’s history of similar disasters.

The landslide occurred on Motutara Road, prompting immediate action from Fire and Emergency New Zealand. Three fire appliances have been deployed to the scene, with officials urging nearby residents to leave the area. “The properties in the immediate vicinity are being evacuated. Any members of the public who haven’t been evacuated and are worried should call 111 so that Fire and Emergency knows where they are,” a spokesperson said.

Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams are also on-site, working alongside Fire and Emergency. A geotechnical engineer from Auckland Council has been called in to assess the situation, and additional support is on standby if needed.

Despite the ongoing efforts, police have not yet arrived at the scene, and the situation remains under close monitoring. The Muriwai Lodge owner said there was little visible damage from the road, but residents are advised to stay cautious.

This latest incident has stirred memories of the 2023 landslide caused by Cyclone Gabrielle, which resulted in two firefighter fatalities and extensive property damage. At the time, 128 homes were red-stickered, and 48 were yellow-stickered, leaving many residents in limbo for months as the land was assessed.

Geotechnical surveys using helicopter-mounted Lidar revealed significant ground movement, with some areas shifting up to two metres in a single week. The recent event has reignited fears about the stability of the region, prompting calls for increased monitoring and support for affected communities.

Residents are being advised to stay informed through local authorities and to avoid the area until it is deemed safe. The council has emphasized that anyone feeling their life or property is at risk should immediately contact emergency services.

The situation in Muriwai highlights the ongoing challenges faced by communities in landslide-prone areas. As the search and rescue teams continue their work, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of all residents and minimizing further damage.
