Missing Whanganui Man Kahu Gill May Have Been Swept Away in Flooded River
A 20-year-old man from Whanganui is missing after a possible car accident in a flooded river, according to local authorities. Police believe Kahu Gill may have been swept away in the river's powerful currents.
Whanganui police confirmed that Kahu Gill was last seen on Friday, 27 June, and his car was found in the Whanganui River on 2 July. A spokesperson for the police department stated that it is believed he was in the vehicle when it crashed into the river, which was swollen due to heavy rainfall.
"The car was found in the river, and it is believed that Kahu was in the car when it went into the water," the spokesperson said. "He may have been swept away by the strong floodwaters." The police have launched an ongoing search operation, with an aerial search planned for Saturday to help locate any possible clues.
Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information, especially regarding specific clothing items. They are asking people to report any sightings of a black hoody with red text on the sleeves and camo cargo pants near the river or coastline.
"We are asking the community to help us in this search," said a police officer. "Any information, no matter how small, could be vital in locating Kahu." The car has since been removed from the river, and the search continues.
As the investigation unfolds, the local community is on high alert, hoping for positive news. The search efforts highlight the dangers of driving in flooded conditions, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
"This is a very serious situation, and we are doing everything possible to find Kahu," the police spokesperson added. "We are also reminding the public to stay safe and avoid flooded areas." The community remains hopeful that Kahu will be found soon.
