Israeli Strike Kills Children Near Gaza Clinic with No Immediate Truce in Sight
A recent Israeli airstrike near a medical center in Gaza has resulted in the tragic deaths of 10 children and six adults, according to local health authorities. This incident has further complicated ongoing ceasefire negotiations, which have shown little progress and no immediate resolution in sight.
Verified video footage from the strike in Deir al-Balah, located in the central Gaza Strip, showed the harrowing aftermath of the attack. The images depicted women and children lying in pools of blood, surrounded by dust and the cries of the wounded. One clip captured several motionless children lying on a donkey cart, highlighting the devastation and loss of innocent lives.
Samah al-Nouri, a grieving mother, described the loss of her daughter, who was receiving treatment at a medical facility. “She didn't do anything, she was innocent, I swear. Her dream was for the war to end and that they announce it today, to go back to school,” she said, sitting beside her daughter's body at a nearby hospital.
Israel's military claimed the strike targeted a militant involved in the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, which sparked the ongoing conflict. They also acknowledged reports of injured bystanders and stated that the incident was under review. However, the U.S.-based aid group Project HOPE confirmed that the strike had occurred outside its Altayara health clinic, expressing deep concern over the loss of life.
As the conflict continues, Israeli and Hamas negotiators are holding talks in Qatar, aiming to reach a 60-day ceasefire and hostage release deal. However, a senior Israeli official suggested that an agreement might not be reached for another one or two weeks, while U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed cautious optimism about a potential deal.
Despite ongoing discussions, repeated attacks by Israeli forces have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Gazans, many of them civilians, and have placed immense strain on the enclave's already overwhelmed hospitals. Dwindling fuel supplies threaten the functioning of these critical facilities, including the neonatal unit at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, where doctors have had to place multiple premature babies in a single incubator.
Israeli military officials stated that fuel is being allowed into the enclave, but UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric emphasized that far more fuel is needed to maintain essential life-saving services. Meanwhile, negotiations continue, with U.S. President Donald Trump meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the situation in Gaza.
Netanyahu reiterated Israel's terms for ending the war, including the disarmament of Hamas and an end to its rule over Gaza. However, Hamas has rejected calls to lay down its weapons, stating that if negotiations fail, they will pursue other means, including the use of force.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with over 57,000 people killed and large portions of the territory destroyed. The ongoing conflict has displaced most Gazans, and violence continues in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where an Israeli man was killed by Palestinian militants at a shopping center, and a Palestinian man was shot dead after attacking a soldier.
