Hastings Man Antony Quinney Sentenced to Home Detention for Indecent Conduct with Boy
A 50-year-old man from Hastings has been handed 10 months of home detention for indecent conduct involving a young boy, according to a recent court ruling.
Antony Raymond Quinney, who has no prior criminal record, was found guilty of two charges related to indecent acts with a boy under the age of 12. The offenses occurred during a birthday trip in December 2021, where Quinney took the boy to a secluded area at Cape Kidnappers.
During the outing, Quinney asked the boy to remove his swimwear and took photographs of him. He later took the boy and another child to a motel, where he insisted they sleep in the same bed. It was during this time that indecent touching occurred.
The Napier District Court heard that Quinney denied the allegations, but a jury found him guilty. Judge Bridget Mackintosh noted that Quinney had no criminal history and had supported his parents financially, as well as being a generous charity donor.
However, the judge emphasized that Quinney had taken the boy to a secluded spot, which raised concerns about his actions. The victim's family has been deeply affected, with the boy now showing signs of anxiety and a lack of trust in men. He is receiving counseling and therapy, and the impact of the incident is being felt by others in the family.
As a result of the sentencing, Quinney will serve 10 months of home detention, complete 80 hours of community work, and pay $5,000 in reparation to the boy. The money may be used for ongoing counseling. Additionally, he will be under six months of conditions after his home detention, including no unsupervised contact with individuals under the age of 16.
Judge Mackintosh declined to add Quinney's name to the child sex offender register, citing the intense monitoring during his home detention and post-detention conditions.
