Black Sox Head Towards Medals Round After Second Softball World Cup Win
The New Zealand Black Sox are on the cusp of a medal round at the men’s softball World Cup in Canada after a dominant performance by rookie pitcher Liam Potts, who led the team to a 4-1 victory over Argentina.
The unbeaten Black Sox, ranked eighth in the world, have taken a major step toward the Super Round, where the medals will be decided, following their 8-3 win over Canada on the first day of the tournament. Their latest victory over Argentina, the top-ranked team, has placed them in a strong position heading into the final pool games.
Coach Thomas Makea and battery coach Chubb Tangaroa made a bold decision to deploy 21-year-old left-hander Liam Potts against a strong Argentine lineup, which featured several southpaw hitters. Potts delivered a career-best performance, striking out 11 batters and allowing only four hits in a complete game. His ability to keep the Argentines off balance with clever change-ups was instrumental in the win.
Makea praised Potts’ performance, stating, “He was awesome tonight ... backed up by a solid hitting lineup.” Potts, who was making his first appearance at the World Cup, admitted the game was physically and mentally demanding. “It took a lot of energy. I had to focus on literally every pitch. It was very hard, but we won, so at the end of the day, it was worth it.”
The Black Sox struck first in the second inning when Reilly Makea drew a walk and scored on a double by Rhys Evans. Argentina quickly equalized, but the Black Sox took control in the fifth inning with a two-run rally. Pinch hitter Dante Makea-Makatea and Ben Enoka started the inning with back-to-back singles, and a perfect bunt by Seth Gibson allowed Makea-Makatea to score. Captain Cole Evans then doubled to bring in Gibson, giving the Black Sox a 3-1 lead. Gibson added another run in the seventh inning to seal the win.
The team’s offensive output was impressive, with nine hits recorded against the Argentine pitchers. Substitutes Makea-Makatea and Gibson each contributed two hits, showcasing the depth of the lineup.
Argentina’s loss marked their second defeat in the tournament, while Canada edged Venezuela 11-9 in a thrilling Pool A game. With two wins and no losses, the Black Sox are in a strong position heading into their final Pool A game against Venezuela.
In Pool B, Australia bounced back with a 9-2 win over the Dominican Republic, while Japan narrowly defeated the United States 5-4. All four teams in Pool B now have one win and one loss, setting up an exciting final day of competition.
The Black Sox are now in a prime position to make a strong push for a medal, and their performance so far has demonstrated the team’s resilience and skill. With a mix of seasoned players and emerging talents like Potts, the team is well-equipped to face the challenges ahead.
