Heavy Rain Set to Hit New Zealand, Tasman Faces Fresh Flood Risks

New Zealand is bracing for a significant weather event as heavy rain is forecast to impact the country over the coming days. The upper South Island, including flood-affected areas in Tasman, is particularly at risk, with a 57-hour period of drenching expected to begin today and continue into the weekend.

Widespread Rainfall and Flood Concerns

MetService has issued heavy rain watches across much of the country, with the first wave of rainfall expected to hit northwest Tasman starting at 3 PM today and lasting until midnight on Friday. This is followed by a second, more intense front that will bring heavy northerly rain and strong winds to many areas on Friday. The weather system is expected to linger into Saturday, increasing the risk of surface flooding, slips, and other hazards.

Meteorologist Warns of Worst to Come

Lewis Ferris, a meteorologist at MetService, noted that Friday will likely bring the most severe rainfall of the event. "The bigger concern is as we head into Friday, that’s when we have quite a widespread band of heavy rain moving onto the country from the Tasman Sea, affecting northern and western areas," he said. The saturated ground in the upper South Island increases the vulnerability to flash flooding and landslides, with rain watches likely to be upgraded to warnings by tomorrow morning.

Potential for Thunderstorms

The possibility of thunderstorms accompanying the heavy rain cannot be ruled out, particularly in northern Northland and along the western South Island. While the risk is currently low, it could increase to moderate in southern Westland and Fiordland. These thunderstorms may bring localized heavy rainfall and small hail, adding to the weather challenges.

Unsettled Weather Ahead

The weather outlook for the coming days and weekend remains largely unsettled. While eastern parts of the North and South Islands may experience slightly better conditions, much of the country is expected to remain under a band of rain. Ferris advised people to be cautious with outdoor plans, as the weather is expected to be highly changeable. "It’s looking better for people who are in the eastern areas of the North and South Islands, but really not a perfectly sunny weekend," he said.

Residents Urged to Stay Informed

Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to stay informed about the latest weather forecasts and to take necessary precautions. With the ground already saturated from previous rainfall, the upcoming deluge could lead to dangerous conditions, particularly in low-lying and steep areas. Emergency services are on alert, and local authorities are monitoring the situation closely.

As the weather event unfolds, New Zealanders are being encouraged to remain vigilant and to prepare for potential disruptions to travel and daily activities. The extended forecast suggests that the unsettled weather may persist into the following week, requiring continued attention and planning.
