Two Crew Members Killed, Two Injured in Red Sea Attack on Greek-Vessel
July 6, 2025
A tragic incident unfolded in the Red Sea on Monday evening when a Liberian-flagged, Greek-operated bulk carrier, the Eternity C, came under attack. The assault, involving drones and speedboats, resulted in the deaths of two crew members and injuries to at least two others. This marks the first fatal shipping incident in the Red Sea since June 2024.
The attack occurred approximately 50 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni port of Hodeidah. The vessel, which carries 22 crew members—21 Filipinos and one Russian—was struck with sea drones and rocket-propelled grenades fired from manned speedboats. Sources close to the incident reported that the ship began to list following the attack.
According to an official with the European Union's Operation Aspides, which is tasked with protecting Red Sea shipping lanes, this is the second attack on merchant vessels in the region since November 2024. Hours prior to the incident, the Iran-aligned Houthi militant group claimed responsibility for a separate attack on the MV Magic Seas, another Greek-operated vessel, off the coast of southwest Yemen. The Houthi group claimed the ship had been sunk.
Liberia's shipping delegation, speaking at a meeting of the International Maritime Organization, expressed deep concern over the escalating violence. “Just as Liberia was processing the shock and grief of the attack against Magic Seas, we received a report that Eternity C again has been attacked, attacked horribly and causing death of two seafarers,” the delegate stated.
The maritime security firm Cosmoship Management, which operates the Eternity C, confirmed the injuries and the ongoing efforts to rescue the remaining crew. The incident adds to the growing toll of seafarers killed in the Red Sea, with this attack bringing the total number to six since the beginning of 2024.
With tensions rising in the region and the Red Sea serving as a critical shipping corridor, the international community is increasingly concerned about the safety of maritime trade. Analysts have warned that such attacks could disrupt global supply chains and have called for enhanced security measures and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation.
