Tragic Incident Claims Life of Young Hunter

Police have officially identified the man who tragically lost his life during a hunting trip on Stewart Island as 21-year-old Jock Davies. The incident occurred near Lords River on 5 July, and despite the efforts of a search and rescue team, Davies was found deceased at the scene. Authorities are currently investigating the incident, which includes speaking to individuals who were present in the area at the time.

Tributes Pour In for Beloved Individual

Jock Davies was described by his loved ones as a cherished individual who will be deeply missed. His brother, Tom Davies, expressed his grief on social media, stating that Jock was "dearly loved and always will be." The community, including family and friends, has been left heartbroken by the news, with many sharing heartfelt messages in tribute to his memory.

A Young Life Marked by Resilience

A Child Cancer Foundation article from five years ago highlighted the challenges Jock faced in his youth. In 2013 and 2018, the family received support from the community as Jock underwent treatment for leukaemia and a bone marrow transplant. At the time, he was celebrating his two-year post-transplant anniversary and was enjoying a "sporty, outdoorsy life" just as every 16-year-old boy should be. His passion for the outdoors ultimately led to this tragic incident.

Reactions from Hunting and Safety Organizations

Mountain Safety Council chief executive Mike Daisley expressed that Davies' death would resonate deeply among the country's hunting community. Meanwhile, Deerstalkers Association chief executive Gwyn Thurlow emphasized that fatal hunting accidents in New Zealand are rare. Thurlow shared his condolences, stating, "Our hearts go out to the family and the people involved in this tragedy. It's just so sad that it's happened to such a young person."

Call for Awareness and Caution

Davies' passing serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with outdoor activities, even for experienced individuals. As the investigation continues, there is a growing call within the community for increased awareness and safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
