Police in Napier executed a search warrant at a residence and uncovered five military-style semi-automatic firearms in children’s bedrooms. The alarming discovery has sparked concern over public safety and the responsibility of firearms license holders.

The firearms were found during a raid at the home of a 42-year-old man who holds a firearms license. Detective Senior Sergeant James Keene confirmed that the weapons were not stored securely and that ammunition was also accessible. The presence of prohibited firearms in a space occupied by children was described as one of the most disturbing aspects of the case.

"The firearms were not locked away as required, and ammunition was also accessible. Officers were concerned that vulnerable children could have access to the firearms," Keene stated. The arrested man was found to lack the necessary endorsement on his license to legally possess such firearms.

The man has been remanded in custody and faces a total of 14 charges, including unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, prohibited parts, prohibited ammunition, and prohibited magazines. Additional charges include drink-driving, dangerous driving, and failing to stop to ascertain injury, as well as using a document to obtain property.

Before this incident, the man’s firearms license had already been suspended by the Firearms Safety Authority–Te Tari Pūreke, following a prior driving incident. Angela Brazier, the Authority’s executive director, highlighted the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and the Firearms Safety Authority in addressing such cases. She emphasized that possessing firearms is a privilege that requires strict adherence to safety and legal standards.

"It is a privilege to possess and use firearms. All license holders must act in the interests of personal and public safety. We know from daily engagement with license holders that most are fit and proper to use a firearm, understand their obligations, and have no trouble meeting them," Brazier said.
