Kiwi Theatre Legend Tim Bray Dies
Beloved children’s theatre pioneer Tim Bray passed away on Saturday after a courageous battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. His contributions to New Zealand’s theatre scene, particularly in children’s theatre, have left an indelible mark on the industry and the hearts of many.
Bray founded the Tim Bray Theatre Company (TBTC), a cornerstone of children’s theatre in New Zealand. For over three decades, the company brought joy and creativity to young audiences while providing a platform for emerging artists to flourish. TBTC was not only a cultural institution but also a vital part of the local economy, operating as a nearly $2 million enterprise and ranking as the second-largest theatre company in Auckland by audience size, just behind the Auckland Theatre Company.
One of Bray’s most notable contributions was the establishment of accessible drama classes for children with autism and other neuro-diverse needs. This initiative opened the world of theatre to those who might otherwise have been excluded, fostering inclusivity and creativity in equal measure.
Bray’s health challenges ultimately led to the closure of the Tim Bray Theatre Company last year, following its final season of The Santa Claus Show ’24. The Pumphouse Theatre, where TBTC held its performances since 2004, released a heartfelt statement acknowledging the end of an era. They described it as a moment when “a curtain has fallen on a theatre legend.”
“Through his incredible mahi and dedication, he not only filled our stage with joy, colour, and imagination but also provided opportunities for thousands of actors, technicians, and creatives behind the scenes to thrive, grow, and shine,” the statement continued. “Arohanui, Tim. Your passion, creativity, and kindness have left an indelible mark on our hearts and our stage. Your magic and mahi will never be forgotten. Your legacy lives on in every child’s laughter, every curtain call, and every moment of theatre magic still to come.”
The TBTC’s journey was not without its challenges. It weathered the global financial crisis and the unprecedented disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, all while operating without multi-year funding or support from Creative New Zealand. Despite these obstacles, the company remained a beacon of resilience and innovation in the arts sector.
Tim Bray’s legacy is one of passion, creativity, and unwavering dedication to the arts. His work has inspired generations of young people and artists, and his influence will continue to be felt in the vibrant world of theatre for years to come.
