A 35-year-old woman has been charged with arson following a fire at a small church in Christchurch. The incident occurred in New Brighton, where emergency services were called to the church on Atlantis Street after the fire alarm was triggered at approximately 2:30 PM.

Three fire trucks initially responded to the scene, but crews found the fire already well underway and requested two additional units for backup. Despite the intensity of the blaze, the fire was quickly extinguished, and reports from the scene indicated that the exterior of the church appeared to be undamaged.

Later that afternoon, police arrested the suspect and have since charged her with arson. She is expected to appear in the Christchurch District Court the following day. Fire investigators are currently examining the scene to determine the cause of the fire and whether it was intentional.

The incident has raised concerns within the local community, with many expressing shock at the sudden blaze at a place of worship. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.

Arson is a serious offense in New Zealand, and if convicted, the suspect could face significant legal consequences. The case highlights the importance of fire safety and the need for vigilance in protecting community spaces.
