Elon Musk Announces Formation of New U.S. Political Party
Elon Musk, the world's richest person and co-founder of Tesla and SpaceX, has declared the creation of a new political party in the United States. The "America Party", as he calls it, aims to challenge what Musk describes as the nation's "one-party system" and restore freedom to the American people.
The announcement came just days after Musk had a public feud with U.S. President Donald Trump over the latter's push to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill, a sweeping legislative proposal. Musk has been a major political donor to Trump in the 2024 election cycle but has recently criticized him and other Republican leaders for what he calls "debt slavery."
Musk cited a poll conducted on his social media platform X, where over 1.2 million users responded to a question asking whether they wanted independence from the current two-party (or uniparty) system. The results showed that by a factor of 2 to 1, respondents were in favor of a new political alternative.
"When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy," Musk posted on X. "Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."
The Trump-Musk feud has been intensifying, particularly after Musk publicly criticized the One Big Beautiful Bill. Trump responded with threats to deport Musk, citing his South African birth and U.S. citizenship since 2002. Musk, in turn, has vowed to launch a new political party to counter what he sees as the hypocrisy of lawmakers who campaigned on reducing federal spending but backed the bill, which experts warn could increase the U.S. deficit by $3.4 trillion over a decade.
Musk's new political party is being positioned as a response to the growing dissatisfaction among Americans with the current two-party system. While the success of such a party remains to be seen, Musk's influence and wealth could make it a significant player in the U.S. political landscape.
As the U.S. political scene continues to evolve, the formation of the America Party could have far-reaching implications for the 2026 and 2028 elections. Whether it will be able to challenge the dominance of the Democratic and Republican parties remains an open question.
