Man Robs Whanganui Jewellery Store with Hammer

A man armed with a hammer has robbed a jewellery store in Whanganui. The incident occurred on Victoria Ave on Saturday about 1pm, police said in a statement. The man allegedly entered the store and smashed open several display cabinets, stealing a number of items before fleeing in a vehicle.

The store staff were not injured in the robbery but were left distressed by the ordeal. Detective Sergeant Andrew Jurgens said an investigation had been launched. “We are appealing for any witnesses who have not yet spoken to us to please come and do so,” he said. “We would also ask anyone who may have captured cellphone or dashcam footage of the incident to please share it with us as soon as possible.”

The alleged offender smashed several display cabinets and stole a number of items before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
