Health New Zealand is exploring a new initiative to collaborate with private healthcare institutions to share the costs of registering nurses and midwives. This plan aims to address funding challenges while ensuring sustainable development in the medical workforce. The initiative has been piloted in orthopaedic surgery, with other fields like radiology, pathology, and obstetrics & gynaecology still under exploration. Private institutions have shown support through cost-sharing models, including the Southern Cross Healthcare group which operates 34 private hospitals contributing to 67% of emergency surgery training tasks. The New ZealandPrivate Surgical Hospitals Association is also backing this project, emphasizing fair and transparent cooperation frameworks. This partnership highlights the potential for public-private collaborations in enhancing medical education and workforce sustainability.
